Abstract

This study was done to identify the level of self-concept and the relationship between self-concept and academic achievement in the first year of nursing students. To collect the data, 105 students attending day-classes and 98 students evening -classes were surveyed on November in 1998. The data was analyzed by SPSS program using percentiles, t-test, and Pearson¢¥s Correlation Coefficients.

The results are as follows:

1) In general characteristics, more than half(52.7%) of subjects came from the large cities, and live with family(75.9%), and entered without any stagnant year(68%). Less than half(46.7%)of subjects answered that they knew about nursing before they entered.
Half(50.7%) of subjects answered that they chose nursing for job-vision.
Less than half of them(41.6%) reported they satisfy relatively with college life.
2) Comparing the subscores of 14 areas of Self-concept to norm, there was no difference in its Self-criticism area. In Self-positivity area, the subjects scored higher than norm. The variable score and Distribution score were higher than norm.
3) Day-classes were superior in Physical self score and Distribution score among 14 areas to evening-classes.
4) During the first semester, the relationships between Self-concept and academic achievement was significant in Total positive self score(TP),Self identity score( I ), Self satisfaction score( II ), Moral ethical self score(B), Personal self score(C), Fanuly self score(D) (P<.05).
5) During the first year, academic achievement was significantly related to
Self-concept in its Self identity score( I ), Physical self score(A), Moral ethical self
score(B), Personal self score(C), Family self score(D) (P<.05).
6) There was a significant difference between Positive self group and negative self
group showed in academic achievement.
